Best Blinds & Curtains in Singapore

Your Guide to Shopping for Curtains & Blinds in Singapore

When it comes to window coverings, there are so many options that it can be overwhelming to choose what’s right for your home. How you dress your windows can have a big impact on the overall look of a room, but picking colours and materials is just the tip of the iceberg. Often, one of the biggest decisions will be choosing between curtains or blinds (although sometimes a combination of the two is best), but even this isn’t just a question of aesthetics, as it’s important to consider functional practicalities and maintenance too. After all, we don’t just dress windows to make a style statement – it’s also about privacy, controlling the flow of light into a room, and keeping heat out.

When shopping for curtains and blinds in Singapore, it can seem like a daunting task. There are many brands and suppliers, all with a huge range and different components to consider, making it hard for someone to just walk in and make the right decision for their home. Especially if you’re a first home owner like me, or not confident with interior decorating, a little introduction to the world of curtains can be a big help.

I was recommended Drapes Studios, by my sister who also had her blinds installed by them. I set up an appointment with KL, the founder, who is not only experienced in window treatments like curtains and blinds but also films, wallpaper and upholstery.

First: Blinds or Curtains?

Naturally my first question for KL was blinds or curtains? When it comes to choosing blinds or curtains in Singapore, the key question is what is the best fit for your home? This can be a tricky question, as you’ve got so many options when you throw blinds into the mix. Luckily, KL broke down some of the key differences to make it easier when you’re considering your window furnishings.

If you’re window decorating for the whole home, then it’s likely you’ll be looking at a combination of both curtains and blinds, and this is where the experience of KL really helped.

What ‘look’ are you after?

For many people, choosing between styling windows with either blinds or curtains is a tricky decision. Curtains often provide a more traditional, elegant style in the home, while blinds tend to look more chic and contemporary. If you’re trying to keep the costs down while decorating, blinds often come at a much lower price, especially for larger windows, but the right blind will still add the perfect finishing touch to your room.

If you’re looking to add an element of luxury and warmth, curtains may be the best option. However, if you prefer simplicity and contemporary style, you might want to consider investing in blinds. You could also think about combining blinds and curtains to completely block out any unwanted light, and make a stunning style statement in your window.

While certainly not the whole package, fabrics are what you’ll spend most of your time considering when selecting your perfect curtains. No matter what colour your walls, the design of your lounges or the amount of light in a given room, Drapes Studios can custom make a look that will match beautifully.

It’s also best to keep the number of colours and patterns of your curtains down to two or three in a room, so as to avoid overpowering the space and distracting from the look and quality of the fabrics you’ve chosen. During the on-site consultation, KL brought along a lot of samples to make it easier to match designs. I decided to go with curtains in my living room, here are what I chose.

Normal Night Curtain
The room darkening opacity reduces natural light from shining into my living room while providing privacy. It is crafted from light-weight polyester which gives the room a modern and airy look. These curtains are also machine washable and non-shrink which make them easy for maintenance. I chose the mist grey, a neutral solid hue which keeps it versatile.

Sheer Day Curtain

Darker grey sheer gives a nice contrast to the light grey blackout curtains and provides privacy especially since mine is a corridor unit.

For my Master Bedroom, I picked Dim Out Night Curtains in dusty pink which adds a bit of femininity and softness to the space. It also block out most of the light, perfect for that Sunday sleep in. These curtains are also machine washable, making them easy to care for. I also added Sheer Day Curtains in white which helps to provide privacy in the day time, filter off the direct sunlight and glare and add a touch of softness to the space.

In my multi-purpose room, I wanted a more coastal and resort look so I went with Wooden Venetian Blinds. Made with ultra light wood and an easy-lift system, these are super convenient to operate. I selected white with black ladder tapes which is a classic and timeless combination, suitable for any interior design themes. I find these Venetian blinds are very good for light control and also allows air ventilation.
